For years Bay Area homeowners have struggled through the challenges of keeping their flooring new and beautiful. They’ve been told to vacuum or mop it regularly. In addition, some floorings have been required to be sealed every year or two. Finally, professional carpet cleaning and hardwood cleaning is also recommended on an annual or more frequent basis. However, despite all of this, the unknown spill or pet stain has always loomed as a potential added expense or unknown factor that could ruin the flooring.

Things are changing. In the past six months, many major manufacturers have come out with new waterproof flooring. While this doesn’t take the odor away and is not full proof for everything, it does add a layer of protection which can keep the unexpected away. The flooring has taken on several forms.

Waterproof Carpeting

A few months ago, Shaw Floors, a leading manufacturer, came out with “Life Guard”. This carpeting has waterproof backing and can withstand up to 25,000 pounds of water. A kid’s accident will not penetrate this very easily. Additionally, pet accidents are better protected, although the bacterial infections have to be considered. Thus, the carpet is protecting you from many of life’s spills and accidents. This can help alleviate some of the worry and leave you with just your usual professional carpet cleaning needs.

Waterproof Hardwood Flooring

Carpet is not the only type of flooring getting a fresh approach. Shaw and other manufacturers are also coming out with waterproof hardwood flooring. These types of flooring usually involve a waterproof core. This keeps the liquid from seeping beyond the first layer of flooring. As a result and similar to the carpet, kids and pet stains become less prominent and the unexpected no longer needs to worry a Bay Area homeowner.

Styling Included

A big concern homeowners may have is how stylish is this flooring. The answer is that it’s very nice. However, this is a relatively new product so it doesn’t have the vast diversity of product lines. As a result, it will take some time for the amount of options grows to a reasonable level.

Whether you have this latest style or maintain the traditional flooring, contact your hardwood and carpet cleaning specialists today at Diablo Carpet and Floor Restoration at 925-833-0408 to help keep your flooring beautiful.

Taking the Haze off of your Hardwood

hazey hardwoods, cloudy hardwood floors

You scrub and scrub and clean your hardwood but you notice that there is this haze or cloudiness on the hardwood in the living room. The source of this issue is usually a result of the chemicals and liquids used or spilled on the ground. This is taking away from the beauty and clean lines of hardwood flooring. So what can you do to fix the haze on your hardwood floors?

The following is one approach that could help remove the issue:

Step 1

Use your vacuum or broom to sweep the hardwood floor around the area of the haze. Should your vacuum have a brush head, we recommend using this as this can help dig deep and remove the residue on the floor. This step helps remove the stuff that would be making the floor dirty.

Step 2

The next step is to create a solution to clean the area by combining a ½ cup of ammonia and a gallon of warm water.

Step 3

Use the above formula with a soft cloth mop (i.e. terry cloth) to clean the impacted area.

Step 4

After you’ve mopped the area, you should remove the solution using a microfiber cleaning cloth. This should be followed by buffing the dry floor through circular motions, applying moderate pressure on the hazy areas.

Step 5

Upon completion, let the floor recover by not walking on it for 1 hour.

Lastly, if the problem persists, repeat the above process until the haziness leaves. The following are some additional tips to maintaining your hardwood flooring:

  • On a weekly basis, you should be vacuuming the area with a brush head and using a damp mop. You can even use some mild water with microfiber cleaning cloth.
  • Place hardwood designed floor mats in high traffic areas and have them shaken off each week.

If you are still unsuccessful in getting haze off the floor, contact Diablo Carpet and Floor Restoration where we offer professional hardwood cleaning throughout the East Bay.

Bringing Color Back to Your Carpet

Over the course of time, many pollutants, chemical, or just nature can damage carpet.  The biggest harm is getting carpet discoloration.  Some of this occurs through observing darker, soiled areas in high traffic locations.  Others become visible where a spill occurred of a food, drink, chemical, or pollutant.  For instance, bleach spots can remove the color off carpet or fertilizer sometimes has bleach in it which has the same effect.  These spills may not always be visible right away.  They may become noticeable over time or if you clean the remaining carpet then this affected area stands out.  However, once any of these carpet discolorations become noticeable, it is clear that the carpet is damaged.  So what are the solutions?

1: Remnant Patching

If you have remnants of your original carpet, some people will use it to replace the impacted area.  This is a very drastic option but one of the most commonly used ones.  People find it easy and many individuals keep extras of their original carpet.  The cost of this method can be high and depending on the size and location, the replaced area may be noticeable.

2: Hiding It

Hiding the area is another option.  Some people will try to conceal the problem spot by purchasing an area rug or other furniture.  The cost of this can be high but the bigger issue is that these bleach spots or other discoloration are usually not in an area that can be easily hidden.

3: Dye it Yourself

There are several DIY (Do it Yourself) options to bring back the color or restore your carpet color.  These solutions are things like dye pens, carpet dyes, or our favorite, using a close in color crayon and coloring in the carpet fibers.  These solutions are very inexpensive and the look of it can show that.  While some are successful in making the carpet look presentable, most can cause further harm to their carpets like in the image here.

4: Professional Dye Matching

The best option is to contact a professional carpet restoration specialist as soon as you discover the issue.  Professionals in this area like Diablo Carpet and Floor Restoration know how to color match and get that carpet back to its original look.  Most of the times these problem areas are in high traffic locations where a cheap solution would be noticeable and distracting.  Carpet bleach spot dying can make the carpet of your Danville, Pleasanton, or Walnut Creek home like new.

Making your Tile like New

tile cleaning, grout cleaning,

Do you remember when you moved into your Lafayette home or remodeled that Walnut Creek house? Do you recall how beautiful the tile and grout looked in there. It’s now been several years and all you can see is brown, black, and other grime in between the tiles. Tile floors and surfaces lose their shine and luster. Scrubbing and mopping do not fully clean the area. Grout absorbs almost all dirt and debris. Weekly cleaning does not bring out the gunk absorbed in the grout. What can you do to return the luster?

Grout and Tile Cleaning Options

You have a few options. The most draconian of these options is to just tear the tile out and move to a different/new material that is clean and devoid of all the residue. This is very drastic and would not be recommended unless there are other reasons to go this route.

Many people take the choice of getting a chemical from the store, some commercial gloves, and brush. They then can spend hours or even days scrubbing like crazy to get all the little crevices clean and free of dirt. This solution can be cost effective but it may not be thorough enough and could waste a lot of your precious time.

Lastly and the best recommendation is to hire a professional tile cleaner to come and restore your tile to “like new” condition. These professionals have commercial level equipment, high quality solutions, and experience in doing detailed cleaning. In addition, professional cleaners are usually qualified to place a sealant on the tile and grout to protect against future soiling of the area.

By having your tile and grout professionally cleaned, you are extending the life of your flooring and avoiding the necessity of spending large amounts of money for new tile. Thus, contact your tile flooring specialist today at Diablo Carpet and Floor Restoration at 1-925-833-0408.

What Should You Ask Before Hiring a Professional Carpet Cleaner?

Questions to Ask Your Carpet Cleaner

Most of us know that you should get your carpet professionally cleaned periodically. What questions should you ask before hiring a company near you to clean your carpet?

  1. How long have you been doing professional carpet cleaning?

This question is important because being able to clean carpets is not enough. With experience comes the ability to recognize solutions and dangers. Certain flooring may require special treatment or a less common method of cleaning. There are multiple ways to clean carpets and get rid of stains. While some of this can be “book learned”, quite a bit of it comes through the experience of using and trying several methods through the course of business.

  1. What do your services include?

Many shoppers look at the quoted price and compare them as if they are equal. This usually isn’t the case. Some carpet cleaning companies will charge incidentals like travel, stain removal, extra room charges, etc. The best professional carpet cleaning companies will actually come do a free estimate and give you a final price that won’t be changed once you’ve hired them.

  1. Will you be able to remove the stain?

Families will most often call to have the carpets professional cleaned in two scenarios:

  • it’s time for their regular cleaning
  • they need a stain removed

Stain removal can be very tricky and is most effective if the call is made right away. Find out what techniques the cleaner uses to clean stains (pre-spray is usually recommended) and also ask them about the likelihood of the stain coming completely off. Do not be misled into paying hundreds of dollars for service that doesn’t solve the stain issue.

  1. What is your response time?

It’s important to know a company’s response time, because how quickly they can address a recent stain us very important. Plus you’ll want to know how long you’ll have to wait for your appointment. If they give you a four hour window, this can impact your daily schedule. Make sure you know how attentive the carpet cleaning company is to your needs.

3 Tips For Cleaning Your Flooring

3 Tips for Cleaning Your Floors Contra Costa Carpet Cleaner

People are always looking for the latest (and hopefully best) cleaning technique for their carpet, hardwood, tile, or area rug. What options are organic? How can I ensure the cleaner is safe for my kids? Safe for my pets? What should I do to make sure it doesn’t ruin my flooring?

  1. Read the Manufacturers Recommendations

Despite all the fancy new cleaners and techniques, it’s still important to start with the flooring manufacturer’s recommendations. This can be hard since most of us aren’t the original owners of our flooring. If you can, ask the person you bought your home from if they know the original builder or flooring manufacturer. If not, you should talk to a professional flooring cleaner to come evaluate your floors to see the best cleaning techniques.

  1. Don’t be the Guinea Pig

It is easy to see a demo at the store or watch an infomercial and want the latest trend in cleaning. You really don’t want to jump on the bandwagon to become one of the first users, though. It’s important to talk to professional, speak to the manufacturer, or at least test it on an extra piece of flooring. The last thing you want to do is use a new cleaner on your floors and discover that it caused discoloration or didn’t take care of the original problem.

  1. Read the Ingredients

While most of us are not scientists, almost all of us can read the list of ingredients. We can research any ingredients we don’t know and find out their effects on humans and pets along with their effectiveness in floor cleaning.

Even after all that, make sure there has been professional testing done on any new chemical or technique. Read through reviews and information. If in doubt, speak to a professional floor cleaner and do not use it until you are certain you won’t cause permanent harm to the interior of your home or business.

Why Buy an Area Rug?

Why Buy An Area Rug? Carpet cleaning, floor care, hardwood cleaning,

Over the past twenty years, Diablo Carpet and Floor Restoration has noticed a big shift throughout San Ramon, Danville, Pleasanton, Dublin, and Blackhawk communities.  Homes have been getting rid of carpet and replacing it with hardwood, laminate, or luxury vinyl tile.  These types of flooring are beautiful and can bring a lot of class to home.  Many families still consider and often purchase an area rug for a variety of reasons.  If you are considering purchasing an area rug, here are some factors that lead many to buy one:

Feeling of Warmth

Historically, carpet has always felt and been a warmer form of flooring.  It has brought a sense of calm and comfort to many when they enter a carpeted area.  Similarly, many families long for this feeling.  An area rug can bring some of the warmth that a traditional carpeted area has.

Decorative

Many hard floorings have a very monotone look to them or they can seem expansive in a big room.  An area rug brings a level of décor and distinction.  It breaks apart a room and can add an accent décor to the whole room and home.

Noise Buffer

Similar to carpeted rooms, an area rug can have a cushioning effect.  Hardwood surfaces tend to have sound bounce off of them in a more dramatic fashion.  Thus, an area rug can shield the sound and provide a buffer.  This results in a quieter environment through the use of area rugs.

Allergens Filter

Carpets can often capture various allergens which would normally float around the room.  In a hardwood area, these allergens would not have anything to grapple to.  An area rug provides such an outlet.  Allergens would get drawn to the area rugs and so long as they are cleaned regularly, they can provide a good filter and limit the allergic reactions as a result of your home

Flooring Trends for the 2018 New Year

flooring trends 2018, hot fresh new style floors

As we clean flooring throughout San Ramon, Danville, and Blackhawk, Diablo Carpet & Floor Restoration customers are starting to ask where to expect flooring trends to go. This is particularly true for homes where the flooring is outdated or those looking to renovate.

Gray Colored Flooring

2017 saw a big push towards gray colored flooring.  It looks modern, fresh, and is easily compatible with multiple interior design styles. This flooring tends to come in various patterns and can be carpet, vinyl, tile, and even some stained hardwood flooring.  The coming year will see gray flooring get even more popular, it’s just getting started!

Textural Color

While grays have been in, variety of looks and colors has also exploded.  What does this mean?  Solid browns, whites, and other traditional solid colors are out.  Dappled, streaky, and patterned colors are in.  Companies are utilizing a variety of materials, prints, and designs to expand upon what a floor can be in a home.  Families are now bringing more of their personality out through flooring color choices.  Check out a local flooring store and see all the unique styles that have taken hold.

Dent Resistant

Do items somehow get dropped in your home? Have you been frustrated by a dent in your floor? One of the newest flooring trends emerging is the development of dent resistant flooring.  We are seeing this mostly in luxury vinyl tile but it’s expanding into laminate flooring too.  If you have kids or tend to be clumsy, this could be a great option for flooring.

Waterproof Flooring

Bigger than dents, a floors biggest enemy is water.  Manufacturers have been working for years to find a way to limit the impact of water on floors.  When you spill that glass of water, your flooring could get moldy or it could become discolored. In the past, this has led many homeowners to replace their flooring.  However, 2018 may see this problem evaporate.  Beautiful hardwood flooring, vinyl tile, and carpet are already being released that is water resistant or waterproof.  While this will not remove the need to getting your flooring professionally cleaned by your local carpet cleaner or hardwood floor cleaner, it will reduce the need to get flooring replaced due to water damage.

How to Care for Your Area Rug

Area rug cleaning and care

As hardwood floors have risen to equal popularity as home carpeting, area rug cleaning has become a more common need.  We all know to vacuum our carpets but what should we do to keep our area rugs clean?  Some are old, and made of finer materials than carpets.  Others utilize newer materials that have special cleaning requirements.

Always read the manufacturers cleaning requirements.  Following those guidelines will usually put you on the right track. If you don’t have instructions or can’t adhere to them, here are some tips for cleaning area rugs.

Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs, especially traditional ones, are usually handmade, older, and need careful care.  A normal vacuum’s brushes are generally too harsh and can damage these rugs.  You can use an older vacuum with a beater bar and work with the vacuum attachments to avoid sucking up the fringes of the rug.  A common practice is to use a covering over the hose attachment to prevent sucking it up.  Nylon hosiery or a sheer cloth is usually the best type.

Alternatively, if your area rug is on the smaller side, you could utilize an old fashioned but effective method: hanging it outdoors and using a soft brush to clean it off.  Even if you do this, we recommend running a vacuum over the back of the rug as it can gather debris, and won’t be damaged by the vacuum.  It is recommended that you have the rug professionally cleaned annually, or every year and a half if it’s in a low traffic area.

Flat-Woven Rugs

These area rugs are usually very similar to carpeting.  It’s recommended that you clean the rug as often as you would vacuum other areas of your home.  You can hang it outdoors and clean it with a soft brush for smaller rugs, or even shake the dust outside if the rug is small enough.  A select few types of flat-woven rugs can be washed.  Read the manufacturer’s instructions, some may require you to hand wash them or put them in a bag when using a washing machine. It’s important to professionally clean flat-woven area rugs approximately annually or depending on the traffic volume.

Pile Rugs

If a pile rug is made of wool, then wet cleaning is preferred.  If your area rug is made of silk, then it should be washed with a dry method.  A simple technique to check if you’ll lose color while cleaning is to take a damp cloth and run it gently over the area rug.  If color transfers to the cloth then you know the area rug will lose color if you wet-clean it.

Shag Rugs

If you have a shag area rug then a canister vacuum works best.  Traditional upright vacuums will likely damage the shag loops.  Another effective tool for maintaining these area rugs is a carpet rake, as it could help detangle them.
