The first steps you take in responding to a spill or stain on your area rug will largely determine the likelihood of whether the stain becomes permanent or can be removed. The wrong approach can permanently set the staining properties.
We recommend your first steps are to blot (not scrub) moisture with paper towels or a white cloth. If the spill is a sold, scrape the substance with a spatula or spoon. Continue to discard damp towels for dry ones. Step on the towel to absorb any solution that might have penetrated deep into the area rug fibers.

Some stains are permanent and the only method of removal is to strip the color and redye the area, or a patch/plug. DCFR has years of experience with stain removal and can guide you in the most effective treatment.
Many stains are removable while they’re fresh or haven’t been “worked on.” The key is to know the source of the stain (wine, beverage, coffee, ink, hair dye, Christmas tree/plant water damage, etc.), and the area rug material.
Spots and Stains that reappear? Remember that “ring around the collar” commercial where they failed to “rinse” all the chemicals, so the clothes quickly re-soiled? The same is true of area rugs. Spotters are wonderful if you take the time to rinse/extract and neutralize them. A little vinegar and water can help you neutralize spotting solutions. More helpful is an extractor, such as a wet-dry shop vacuum.
