Complimentary Spot and Stain Removal Solutions

The stay-in-place order is presenting all sorts of challenges for homeowners, including carpet and upholstery cleaning. We know that more in-home activities will mean more chances for accidental spills and soiled floors. So, here are a few simple tips to help you and your carpets get through these difficult times.

Stop Dirt and Grime at the Door

Dirt is the number one cause of carpet fiber wear and soiling. Keeping dirt outside, where it belongs, will cut down on your carpet and upholstery cleaning needs. It helps to use doormats and large 3 x 5′ walk-off mats at all entrances. Place the mats outside entryways, as well as inside the garage door. This will significantly cut down on the amount of grime tracked into your home. Because the mats will accumulate dirt, remember to vacuum or shake them two to three times a week.

Leave Shoes at the Entryway

Shoes carry all kinds of nasty things inside. Just think of the places they’ve been. Not only can they cause premature wear that distorts your carpet’s appearance, but they also grind dirt down into the fibers. Many of our clients park their shoes at the entryway and choose to wear comfy slippers or indoor sandals, instead. Socks or bare feet are an equally good alternative.

Change Your HVAC Filter

It’s something you probably seldom think about, but a dirty air filter causes your HVAC system to work less efficiently. A less efficient HVAC leaves dust particles in the air, impacting your indoor air quality. It’s a good idea to change the filter out every 60-90 days to be sure it’s properly removing dust. Also, check and replace the return air filter too

Vacuum Often

During this time of extended in-home stay, more frequent vacuuming is recommended. Vacuuming high-traffic areas will go a long way to reducing dirt and pollutants that damage carpets, as well as your indoor air quality. We suggest making five to seven vacuum passes in a crisscross pattern. Also, don’t forget to change your filter bag or canister before it exceeds 50% capacity. While you’re at it, why not use a shop vac (or vacuum tools) to get to those couch cushions, and other upholstered furnishings?

Don’t Let Stains Sit

Stains become harder to remove the longer you wait to deal with them. Blot spills, don’t scrub them, and use a white cloth or paper towel. Colored towels can transfer dye to your carpet, making a bigger mess. Different stains require different cleaning methods. To assist you, Diablo Carpet & Floor Restoration created a useful stain removal guide for carpet and upholstery cleaning, plus a homemade stain removal kit that can be found on our website at diablocarpet.com.
